Safety notes
- Only in water deep enough for diving under your pool's operating procedures, with a clear area in front.
- One swimmer at a time; arms always extended over the head on entry. Never dive into shallow water.
- Follow the pool's rules on starting blocks – this activity is from the poolside only.
What it develops
- Streamlined starts from the side
- Starts suited to each stroke
How to run it
- Stand with toes over the edge, knees bent, hands pointing at the water.
- Push out with the legs, arms reaching forward into a streamline.
- Enter fingertips first, glide, then kick up to the surface.
- Swim a few strokes away from the landing area.
Teaching cues
- Bend and push out.
- Arms first.
- One hole.
- Glide then swim.
Make it easier
- Crouch Dive to Streamline.
- Aim over a noodle.
Make it harder
- Streamlined dive into a breakout.
- Front-crawl and breaststroke versions.
Common faults
- Arms dropping before entry.
- Legs bending in the air.
- Too deep or too flat.
Corrections
- 'Hands lead, head between the arms.'
- Adjust angle with the noodle target.
Assistant / L1 role
- Supervise the queue on poolside so only one swimmer is at the edge at a time.
