Safety notes
- Space swimmers along the wall – breaststroke kicks go wide.
What it develops
- Kick on the front, back and side
- Show early actions for all four strokes
- Show an effective breaststroke leg action
How to run it
- Swimmers hold the wall on their front, arms straight, legs out behind.
- Heels come up towards the bottom, knees stay about hip-width apart.
- Turn the feet out, then kick round and back until the legs snap together.
- Pause in a long shape, then repeat.
Teaching cues
- Heels to your bottom.
- Toes out.
- Kick round and squeeze together.
Make it easier
- Sit on the edge and practise the kick in the water.
- Assistant guides the feet through the circle.
Make it harder
- Face in with a breath every two kicks.
- Move straight on to a float kick.
Common faults
- Knees pulled up under the tummy.
- Pointed toes (no push).
Corrections
- 'Heels up, not knees down.'
- 'Make duck feet before you kick.'
Assistant / L1 role
- Stand behind a swimmer and move their feet through the kick shape, turning the feet out at the right moment.
