What it develops
- Swim front crawl with side breathing
- Front crawl with breathing timed to the arm action
How to run it
- Hold the wall with one hand, other arm by the side, body stretched out.
- Kick gently, face down, blowing bubbles.
- Turn the head (and a little of the shoulder) to breathe – one goggle stays under.
- Turn back down. Repeat on both sides.
Teaching cues
- One goggle in.
- Turn, don't lift.
- Look at the side wall.
- Bubbles out first.
Make it easier
- Stand with feet down and practise the turn.
- Assistant rests a hand lightly on the head to stop it lifting.
Make it harder
- Do the same while kicking across with a float.
- Add a single arm pull timed with the turn.
Common faults
- Chin lifting forwards so both goggles come out.
- Turning the whole body onto the back.
Corrections
- Keep the chin close to the shoulder.
- 'Only your head and one shoulder turn.'
Assistant / L1 role
- Kneel on poolside at water level and watch the goggles: say 'good' when only one comes out.
