Safety notes
- Only reduce aids in standing depth with the swimmer able to recover to standing.
- Check parents understand the plan if the child uses aids outside lessons.
What it develops
- Move forwards about 5 metres
- Float on the front with support
- Float on the back with support
How to run it
- Swimmer starts the activity (e.g. a front float) with their usual aids.
- Let a little air out of armbands, or swap to a single noodle.
- Repeat the same activity so the swimmer feels the difference.
- Celebrate each step down – 'Countdown to no armbands!'
Teaching cues
- Make one small change at a time.
- Repeat the same, familiar activity with less support.
- Praise the effort, not just the result.
Make it easier
- Keep one armband slightly inflated.
- Replace aids with an assistant's support.
Make it harder
- Try the float with no aids at all, close to the wall.
Common faults
- Removing all support at once and knocking confidence.
Corrections
- Go back one step and repeat until the swimmer is relaxed again.
Assistant / L1 role
- Stay beside the swimmer as their 'human armband' while the equipment is reduced.
