Front Float – swimming activities

Floating in a flat position on the front.

Activities

  • Armband Countdown – A planned, gradual reduction in buoyancy aids so swimmers discover they can float with less support.
  • Clap and Stand – Swimmers glide on the front and must recover to standing the moment they hear a clap – quick, safe recovery from a glide.
  • Float Countdown – Swimmers set a personal best for how long they can float, front and back – floating is both a skill and a way to rest.
  • Front Starfish – Wide, stable front float in a star shape – the easiest front float to balance.
  • Jellyfish Float – A tucked mushroom float that lets swimmers feel the water lifting them up.
  • Log Roll Along the Wall – Holding the wall with one hand, swimmers roll from front to back and swap hands – rotation with the wall as a safety net.
  • Magic Carpet – Swimmers lie on their front on a noodle or float 'carpet' and are towed around by a helper.
  • Motorboats – Holding a float, swimmers 'drive' their motorboat by kicking and blowing bubbles.
  • Musical Floats – Swimmers move around freely; when the music or whistle stops they make the float shape the teacher calls.
  • Pancake Flip – With a noodle for support, swimmers roll from front float to back float like flipping a pancake.
  • Rocket Launch – Countdown, blast-off, glide! Swimmers push from the wall in a rocket shape and the teacher watches for a long, thin, still body.
  • Rocket Push – Swimmers push off the wall like a rocket into a streamlined front glide.
  • Shapes – Swimmers make body shapes in the water – star, pencil, ball – to explore buoyancy and body position.
  • Sharks in the Shallows – A chase game where the only safe place is floating like a starfish – swimmers must float quickly to avoid the shark.
  • Star to Rocket – Swimmers float as a star, then squeeze into a rocket shape and push off the floor into a glide – linking floating and gliding.
  • Starfish Wake-Up – Swimmers float as starfish and 'wake up' to standing on the teacher's call – practises floating and recovery together.
  • Superman – A supported front float and glide in a long, flying Superman shape.
  • Tuck and Stand – Recovery from a front float: knees to chest, press the water down, feet down, stand.
