Safety notes
- Goggles are fine for comfort, but also practise without them for water safety.
What it develops
- Go fully under and pick up an object
- Blow bubbles with mouth and nose under
How to run it
- Place four or five coloured sinkers together on the pool floor in standing depth.
- Swimmers take a breath, put their face in and look at the seabed.
- They come up and call out as many colours as they can remember.
- Change the sinkers and play again.
Teaching cues
- Eyes open – blink if you need to.
- Blow gentle bubbles while you look.
- Take your time.
Make it easier
- Only two sinkers.
- Allow goggles for the first round.
Make it harder
- More sinkers and a shorter look.
- Spot the colours, then fetch a named one.
Common faults
- Eyes shut and guessing.
- Coming up coughing from breathing in.
Corrections
- Ask what shape a sinker is to check they looked.
- 'Bubbles out while you look.'
Assistant / L1 role
- Work with swimmers who won't open their eyes, going under with them and pointing at one sinker so they have a single thing to find.
