Safety notes
- Keep moving phases short and in standing depth.
What it develops
- Push and glide on the front
- Streamlined push and glide on front and back
- Keep a flat, horizontal body position
How to run it
- Swimmers walk, jump or swim around the area.
- On 'Statues!' they freeze in a streamline: arms up, hands on top of each other, arms squeezing the ears.
- Stage 2: freeze standing. Stage 3: freeze while floating or gliding.
- Teacher 'inspects' statues and gives one improvement to each.
Teaching cues
- Hands on top of each other.
- Squeeze your ears.
- Stand (or lie) tall and thin.
Make it easier
- Statues standing on the pool floor only.
- Practise the shape on poolside first.
Make it harder
- Freeze into a streamlined glide from a push.
- Freeze on the back in a streamline.
Common faults
- Hands side by side instead of stacked.
- Head pushed forward in front of the arms.
Corrections
- 'Top hand holds the bottom hand.'
- 'Hide your head between your arms.'
Assistant / L1 role
- Help inspect the statues, gently moving arms into place for swimmers who can't feel the correct shape.
