Safety notes
- Depth-appropriate entries only; one swimmer at a time.
What it develops
- Enter the water in different ways and return to the side
- Know how to stay safe and help others safely
- Controlled entries, including an introduction to diving
- Use floating and signalling for self-rescue
How to run it
- Teacher calls a depth or situation: 'unknown depth', 'deep water', 'shallow end'.
- Swimmers choose and perform a safe entry.
- Surface and return to the side.
- Discuss: why not jump into unknown water?

- Check the depth.
- Choose the safest way.
- Back to the side.
Make it easier
- Only step and slide entries.
- Helper at the landing point.
Make it harder
- Add a crouch fall-in with streamline.
- Entry then tread and signal.
Common faults
- Jumping every time.
- Entering near other swimmers.
Corrections
- 'If you don't know the depth, go in feet first slowly.'
- Look before you go.
Assistant / L1 role
- Stand at the entry point, checking the landing area is clear before each swimmer goes.
