Poor body position
Head high, hips low or body bent, making movement hard work.
Activities that help
- Eyes on the Line – Swimmers keep their eyes on the line on the pool floor – a steady, low head gives a flat body and higher legs.
- Magic Carpet – Swimmers lie on their front on a noodle or float 'carpet' and are towed around by a helper.
- Pencil Glide on the Back – Back push and glide in a long pencil shape, starting from the wall.
- Press the T – Swimmers gently press their chest (the 'T' across the shoulders and down the breastbone) into the water to bring the hips up.
- Rocket Launch – Countdown, blast-off, glide! Swimmers push from the wall in a rocket shape and the teacher watches for a long, thin, still body.
- Rocket Push – Swimmers push off the wall like a rocket into a streamlined front glide.
- Shapes – Swimmers make body shapes in the water – star, pencil, ball – to explore buoyancy and body position.
- Superman – A supported front float and glide in a long, flying Superman shape.
- Torpedo Through the Hoop – Swimmers glide through a hoop held at the surface – a target that encourages a long, flat body.
